Dear artists, dear tenants,
Since the start of discussions about cuts to the cultural budget, we have received many messages from tenants with contracts under the Workspace Programme of the State of Berlin.
Here’s what we can share at the moment:
The good news: There has been a clear commitment to preserving the Workspace Programme as well as the Uferhallen!
While no new spaces can be created for now, all leases held by the KRB will remain in place for the time being. Our studio locations at Wilhelmsaue and Leipziger Straße are also still available for short-term bookings.
The bad news: The “abolition” of Kulturraum Berlin gGmbH (KRB) as the managing organisation of the Workspace Programme has been decided.
The abolition of the KRB could lead to significant losses of workspaces, major cost increases within the programme, and legal claims for damages against the State of Berlin. As the necessity of a general leaseholder has not been questioned and there is openness to a potential “restructuring” of the KRB, we are already working on identifying opportunities for improvement. As long as we are here, we will continue to advocate for your artistic workspaces.
Please note that no one will need to vacate their workspace on 1 January 2025. At present, we expect that existing lease agreements will remain in place despite the current crisis.
We will do our best to keep you informed and will share any new developments as they arise. At the beginning of the year, we will host a digital information session, and you’ll receive an invitation via our newsletter. Please understand that we may not be able to respond to individual enquiries immediately at this time.
We remain optimistic as we head into 2025 and hope you all have a great start to the new year!
The team of Kulturraum Berlin gGmbH
