Kultur Räume Berlin, represented by Kulturraum Berlin GmbH, awards a funded workspace for the project spaces section of Berlin’s independent scene within the framework of the Arbeitsraumprogramm (Workspace Programme) The Arbeitsraumprogramm is a funding instrument for providing and securing spaces for artists and cultural workers in the state of Berlin.

We are currently allocating a project space at this location for a maximum of 5 years. The call for proposals is aimed both at artistic project spaces as free, self-initiated places of presentation and production, and at project initiatives without a spatial location from the field of visual arts.
The project space on offer is located at Schätzelbergstraße 1-3 (Berlin-Tempelhof). The four-storey brick building with projecting and receding light and dark brick layers and steel-framed windows was erected in 1926 as a workshop building on the grounds of the Telegraphenzeugamt (Telegraph Office) (architect Otto Spalding).
The listed building was rented in summer 2022 by Kulturraum Berlin GmbH for the workspace programme of KRB GmbH and the space is currently being prepared for use by the areas of visual arts (studios on the ground floor, as well as 1st – 3rd floors), literature (workspaces for literature on the 4th floor) – as well as for the project space (on the ground floor).
The following premises are offered for a maximum of five years for a monthly rent of 4.09 €/m² warm for the premises on the ground floor:
Schätzelbergstraße 1-3, 12099 Berlin, in the district of Tempelhof-Schöneberg, 1 project space as well as an archive room in the basement, which can optionally be rented together with the project space.
The premises comprise the project space on the first floor with a size of approx. 77.67 m² and
a kitchenette (13.18 m²) and an additional archive room (82.02 m²) in the basement (optional rental).

- Floor covering: screed floor light grey (ground floor and basement).
- Clear room heights: approx. 3.50 m or at points with beams 3 m (ground floor) / approx. 3 m and 4.50 m (basement)
- Door widths: 1.16 m wide / 2.2 m high (resistance class RC1) (ground floor)
- Sockets: 2 double sockets per long wall (ground floor), 1 double socket (basement)
- Ceiling outlets: 3 ceiling outlets for lighting available (ground floor)
- WLAN: The provision of WLAN is in the planning stage. There are no additional costs for WLAN use for the users.
- Heating: District heating
- WC: Sanitary facilities (unisex) equipped with WC and hand basin for communal use on the floor (ground floor)
- Kitchenette: Equipped with kitchen sink (ground floor)
- Elevator: Freight elevator available
- Barrier-free: Barrier-free access to the premises, sanitary rooms not barrier-free
- Accessibility: Access via the main entrance and via a second exclusive entrance and exit via the loading ramp to the courtyard (see floor plan). The building and the rooms are accessible 24/7.
The rent is subsidised within the framework of the Arbeitsraumprogramm, i.e. it is offset by subsidies from the state of Berlin, so that the monthly rent payable is 4.09 €/m² warm.
As a tenant, you will conclude a sublease agreement with Kulturraum Berlin GmbH, represented by BIM Berliner Immobilienmanagement GmbH. BIM Berliner Immobilienmanagement GmbH will manage your contract on behalf of Kulturraum Berlin GmbH and will be your contact for all matters concerning your contract.

The rental agreement is concluded for five years, with the obligation to contact Kulturraum Berlin GmbH after two and a half years at the latest and to prove that you still meet the award criteria by submitting appropriate evidence (short documentation of artistic professionalism as a PDF file and a declaration that the residence continues to be in Berlin). An extension beyond this is not possible. If you are still interested in the space, you must reapply for the space in a new call for applications.
Important note regarding the anticipated start date of the lease:
This is a first-time occupancy following refurbishment, i.e. the offered project space is currently undergoing structural refurbishment and the indication of the start of the lease is therefore subject to the proviso that the structural measures could be completed by 31.10.2022 and that the usage permit has been issued.

The space offer is aimed both at artistic project spaces as free, self-initiated places of presentation and production, and at project initiatives without a spatial location from the field of visual arts.
Applications are open to artistic project spaces and initiatives that have their own publicly accessible programme and whose production, presentation and research are defined by the visual arts.
Legal entities and natural persons (individuals, associations, collectives, etc.) are eligible to apply. Up to three users or groups can apply together for one space.
Professional work in an art context and at least one year’s experience in the context of project spaces and initiatives.
artistic/curatorial working method, or engagement with a concept of space in terms of content
opening of an art context that offers space for projects, discourses and activities of third parties (artists, curators, theorists, mediators, etc.)
Main focus of work and first place of residence in Berlin (In the case of groups, the majority of members must have registered their first place of residence in Berlin. In the case of associations, the registered office must be in Berlin).
The following are excluded from funding
- profit-oriented, commercially operating project spaces and initiatives.
- running ongoing workshops, castings, advisory services, classes and other commercial events or offers.
- Project spaces and initiatives that already receive institutional funding (basic funding or similar) can apply for the space. However, double funding is not possible, so that the regular rent must be paid for this period.
- Students or actors still in training will not be considered.

As the Workspace Programme is a state-funded programme, you must submit a de minimis declaration with your application. You can download the form here. Note: If you have received or applied for funding that was certified as aid in the current and/or the last two calendar years, please outline this. Otherwise, you can tick “none”.
Important notes:
Persons who did not participate in the application process cannot be subsequently included in the rental agreement.
Subletting the workspace or parts thereof is only permitted with the prior written consent of Kulturraum Berlin GmbH or represented by BIM.
Good neighbourly behaviour and mutual consideration are assumed. Inconsiderate behaviour and non-compliance with the house rules may result in termination without notice.
Exclusion
Members of the Advisory Board for Project Spaces, employees of the Alliance Kultur Räume Berlin and their relatives are excluded from applying.
The deadline for submitting applications for the workspaces for the project room is Wednesday, 21.09.2022 at 23:59.
We will only consider applications submitted via the online portal. We strongly recommend that you start the application process in good time and prepare all the necessary documents beforehand. Applications received after 23:59 will not be considered.
The selection is made by a sector-specific, independent awarding advisory board, which was appointed for the sector of project spaces within the framework of the Arbeitsraumprogramm (ARP).
The focus is on the following award criteria:
- the quality of the artistic/curatorial work to date
- a convincing spatial concept in terms of content
- the opening of an art context that offers space for projects, discourses and activities for third parties (artists, curators, theorists, mediators, etc.)
- a focus of work located in Berlin
Notes on the award procedure:
- Only complete applications can be considered.
- All information will be treated confidentially and will only be used for decision-making and funding purposes.
- After the selection process has been completed, all applicants will receive an email informing them of the result of their application.
- There is no entitlement to funding.
